No more Berlusconi headlines: Italy goes...Dal TIMES
No more Berlusconi headlines: Italy goes on the charm offensive

Silvio Berlusconi’s Government is to mount a damage-limitation publicity campaign, seeking to remind the world that Italy has more to offer than embarrassing revelations about its leader.

So concerned are ministers that the sex and corruption scandals hanging over the billionaire might stain its reputation abroad, that they will be setting up an emergency task force to bombard news organisations with positive stories about the country.

Michela Vittoria Brambilla, the Tourism Minister, announced the plan yesterday, defying calls from the opposition that the best thing Italy could do would be to simply elect another leader.

The former beauty contestant will be hiring a crack-team of young journalists and communications experts - “with a maximum average age of 30” - as part of a two-pronged strategy to refocus international attention away from showgirls and court cases, and back on to the wealth of cultural and culinary treasures for which Italy is renowned.
“Their first job will be to monitor all the foreign press, including dailies, periodicals and TV in every latitude, from Japan to Peru,” she told Corriere della Sera.

Their second task will be to “bombard those newsrooms with truthful and positive news”, revealing to the world “a generous, truthful and audacious Italy — the Italy of entrepreneurs, art, cultural events and our products”.

“It will not be a government bulletin,” insisted Ms Brambilla, the heir to a steel empire, and a close ally of Mr Berlusconi.

“We will recount concrete facts. Government initiatives will be announced, if that is the case. But above all, we want to reveal a generous, true, and bold Italy - the Italy of entrepreneurs, art, cultural events, and our products.”

Ms Brambilla insisted Italy had weathered the downturn in foreign visitors better than other European rivals. However, in a sign of just how worried her Government is about the coverage of the scandals surrounding Mr Berlusconi, she warned: “If the left-wing continues orchestrating this denigrating campaign, buying pages of foreign newspapers to attack the premier, and talk nonsense about democracy being under threat, it will be us footing the bill.

“Exporters are worried because the only news getting out is the shameful attacks on Berlusconi. This affects national appeal and we cannot allow that,” she said.

“We are a point of reference and of excellence in the world. It has taken centuries to give ourselves this image, and I don’t imagine there is a single Italian who is not happy to defend it.”

“Prime Minister Berlusconi is right. At the moment, we are exporting only insults. There is no time to lose.”

Not even Mr Berlusconi’s vast media empire has been able to contain the negative press, resulting from a summer of sex scandals involving allegations by showgirls and a prostitute.

He has blamed left-wing plotters for the rash of critical front-page news stories across the world, including reports last week of his failed bid to win immunity from criminal prosecution.

At a political rally this weekend, the embattled leader lambasted the foreign press, saying that “badmouthing him” was equal to “badmouthing the whole of Italy.” Recent independent polls found that two thirds of Italians supported the decision by the Constitutional Court last week to strip Mr Berlusconi of his immunity from prosecution.

The IPR poll published by Ansa news agency, said that 59 per cent of those surveyed agreed with the court decision, while six out of 10 believed Mr Berlusconi had overreacted. However, only one quarter said they wanted him to shorten his term of office, or hold early elections.vinchttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13215811801534969351noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7825767123036811279.post-26831142064966292742009-10-13T10:08:01.530+02:002009-10-13T10:08:01.530+02:00@Plinio

Adesso devo andare, a presto.
Ah dimenticavo Ejarque; che dire, forse che ti rendi conto che stai finalmente parlando con qualcuno che di turismo ne sa.
Ma credo che ci farò un post, vedremo.
:-)Luciano Ardoinohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12979979245041105026noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7825767123036811279.post-5641609110701166422009-10-12T19:43:01.605+02:002009-10-12T19:43:01.605+02:00@Luciano
